Redevelopment Program

The SFMAP (San Francisco Museum at the Palace) program was developed and presented to the San Francisco Recreation and Park's Department in 2016 as a response to their RFP for adaptive reuse proposals for the Palace of Fine Arts, a historic landmark in San Francisco.

Collateral Development

The SFMAP program goal is to repurpose the existing building into a modern museum complex that would celebrate innovation past, present and future, promote cultural exchange, provide educational opportunities for the community, and share a dynamic marketplace with creators, residents, and visitors alike.

By leveraging the rich history and architectural significance of the Palace of Fine Arts, SFMAP sought to create a unique and immersive experience that would engage visitors and celebrate the city's vibrant cultural scene.

The Exposition Hall

The EXPOSITION Hall at the Palace, 50,000 sq. ft. of non-ticketed public market place, would restore the central entry sequence Maybeck’s original design established and serve as the central mixed-use community space linking together all of the public functions at the Palace of Fine Arts. A portion of the western elevation will be glass with operable sun shading. This will control solar gain and take advantage of San Francisco’s wonderful light levels year round.

The Marketplace

The 43,500 sq. ft. MUSEUM HALL story galleries are meant to be individual “works of art.” Visitors need not experience galleries in any particular order. The can make their own connections and put themselves “in the picture.” Crown Jewel with its window-wall looking out to the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge is envisioned as a "Habitat For Humans" where San Francisco and Bay Area citizens and museum complex visitors will focus on the region's environmental imperatives.

Interactive Museum

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART AND MATH

The SFMAP Learning Center, upstairs at the Palace, is the 21,500 sq. ft. “away from school” learning place for San Francisco and Bay Area kids, their teachers, local residents and for kids across America through distance learning. The SFMAP Learning Center will focus on digital initiatives inside and outside the museum to enhance learning opportunities for all whom it can reach.

STEAM Learning Center

The 37,300 sq. ft. PALACE THEATER will present an immersive and interactive experience during museum hours that celebrates the contributions of San Francisco and the Bay Area to the world. In the evenings, the theater will be available for a schedule of theatrical, musical, and dance performances and guest speakers. The theater will be a resource for the STEAM Education Learning Center, the Exposition Hall vendors and for curated destination events. SFMAP will replace the existing theater with a new state-of-the-art theater, fully realizing its economic potential.
